Best outdoor pub sessions in Ireland — summer 2026

There's a specific quality to a trad session heard outdoors in an Irish summer — the music carries differently, the evening light stays longer than you expect, and nobody is in a hurry to leave. These are the outdoor and beer-garden sessions worth planning around.

Ireland has developed, over the last two decades, a significantly better relationship with outdoor drinking than its weather strictly warrants. The canopied beer garden has become standard equipment for any pub that wants to keep customers happy from May through September, and a handful of pubs have taken the outdoor session seriously enough to build their reputation around it. These are the ones worth knowing about.

The Curragower Bar, Limerick — Shannon-side with castle views

The Curragower is on Clancy's Strand on King's Island, on the north bank of the Shannon with a direct view of King John's Castle and the Curragower Falls. Live trad sessions every night through summer, and the outdoor area picks up the sound of the falls when the music pauses. It's one of the more unusual pub settings in Ireland — the combination of the medieval castle, the working river, the falls audible in the background and the session coming out the door creates an atmosphere that's difficult to find anywhere else. Sessions start from early evening; the outdoor tables fill quickly on warm nights.

Nancy Blake's, Limerick — the all-weather garden

Nancy Blake's has a large canopied beer garden that operates rain or shine — the canopy is the key detail. Sunday afternoon trad sessions from 15:00, and the garden fills by 15:30 on any decent Sunday. The Friday night live band also uses the garden space in summer. The canopy means this is one of the most reliable outdoor session options in Munster: you're not gambling on the weather, and the session runs to the same schedule regardless. Worth combining with a walk along the quays to the Locke Bar if the evening stretches.

The Crane Bar, Galway — the West End courtyard

The Crane's upstairs room is the famous one — 70 seats, seven nights a week, considered by many to be the finest consistent trad venue in Connacht. But in summer the session spills into the courtyard when the upstairs fills, and the outdoor version has its own appeal. The West End of Galway feels different from the Latin Quarter: less tourist traffic, more local crowd, sessions that run later and looser. The Crane is on Sea Road, about a ten-minute walk from Shop Street, and the walk itself is worth doing in summer evening light.

The Anchor Bar, Dunmore East — by the fishing harbour

Dunmore East is one of Ireland's most photogenic fishing villages — coloured thatched cottages on a headland above a working harbour in south Waterford. The Anchor Bar sits above the boats and does outdoor sessions on summer weekends from Friday to Sunday, with a small terrace that looks directly onto the harbour and the south Waterford coastline. The cliff walk starts from the village and the combination of a morning walk and an afternoon session here is about as good as a summer Saturday gets in Ireland. Fills up fast in July and August — arrive before 19:00 for a terrace table.

The Marine Bar, Ring, Dungarvan — the Gaeltacht session

The Marine Bar in Ring is in the Ring Gaeltacht, a few kilometres outside Dungarvan in county Waterford. It has one of the best reputations for traditional music in Munster — Saturday and Monday night sessions all year, Sunday on bank holiday weekends. The outdoor area overlooks the sea and on a clear day you can see across Dungarvan Harbour. The Gaeltacht setting means conversations at the bar are as often in Irish as in English, and the session reflects that: unhurried, serious, the musicians playing for themselves as much as the crowd. Not easy to get to without a car but worth the journey.

De Barra's Folk Club, Clonakilty, Cork — occasional outdoor sets

De Barra's is one of the best music venues in Munster in any season — a folk club in a converted church in Clonakilty that has been running live sessions since 1981. The Sunday afternoon piping session from 16:00 is famous. In summer, occasional outdoor sets happen in the courtyard behind the venue. Worth checking their schedule before a trip to West Cork: the combination of a beach day in Inchydoney (ten minutes from Clonakilty) and a Sunday evening session at De Barra's is a well-established format that doesn't need improving.

The Cobblestone courtyard, Smithfield, Dublin — the city option

The Cobblestone runs trad seven days a week and in summer the session occasionally extends to the small courtyard out the back. It's a tighter outdoor space than the Munster options, and the Cobblestone's reputation is built on the inside session rather than the courtyard. But on a good Dublin evening in June or July, standing outside with the music coming through the open door is a different kind of experience from being inside. The courtyard has become one of the more photographed spots in Dublin's trad scene, which the regulars regard with a mixture of pride and mild annoyance.

What makes an outdoor session work

The main difference between a good outdoor session and a pub that happens to have outdoor tables is the acoustic intention. The pubs listed above have outdoor spaces where the music is the point — not background noise for a crowd that's there for the weather. The best outdoor sessions tend to happen in smaller spaces, where the sound doesn't dissipate into nothing, and where the musicians have chosen to play outside rather than being moved there by capacity.

Practical notes: outdoor sessions in Ireland are always subject to weather and wind direction. Most of the venues listed have indoor options if it turns. The best times are June through early September, with July and August seeing the longest sessions and the biggest crowds. Arrive early. Bring a layer.
